7up's new commercial campaign: In the past few weeks, you may have noticed a commercial campaign featuring a boiling city-scape in mid summer: "Beware the Heat". During the initial advertisement, there is absolutely no mention of any brand name or logo. It is entirely mysterious.
However during one viewing of the commercial, looking attentively, I tried to discern a brand logo which would be hidden - feeling certain I would not be disappointed. In doing so, I have the strong feeling that I saw a Coca-Cola logo on a wooden fence of a construction site for a second.
Later in the month, the product was revealed on an alternate version of the commercial. It was 7up, however, a company partly affiliated to Pepsi. "Pepsi-QTG" seems to be running the contest, a section of Pepsi-Cola Canada.
Beware the Heat: The commercial spots are featured on the website. In large is the ending of a new commercial, featuring the 7up brand.
Looking into this further, it appears that 7up is a only Pepsi product on an international level. Is Canada part of that international market? Looking at 7up's website and reading their privacy agreement it clearly states the company as Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. However, the Canadian 7up site, makes it obvious that it is a Pepsi-Cola Canada brand.
Brand licensing law is a complex thing. In any case, Pepsi is still very much affiliated with the 7up brand. This commercial did achieve its goal of catching the attention of the public, which will certainly incite many to buy more 7up. Did you notice?
